Chronic Pain and the Opioid Crisis with Pharmacist Steve Ep. 18

Steve Ariens, AKA Pharmacist Steve, joins us on the 18th episode of The Chronically Human Podcast, to discuss how the overdose crisis is affecting those with chronic pain.

Please visit Steve’s awesome website full of motivation and education for those who suffer from chronic pain and have been negatively affected by the Opioid Crisis

http://www.pharmaciststeve.com

We discuss how the current War on Docotrs and pain patients hasn’t reduced the number of overdose deaths, how people in chronic pain are being treated like criminals and how the War on Drugs has nearly destroyed the Doctor patient relationship.

During our discussion we also tackled the myths, exaggerations and outright lies of the recent 60 minutes story about the origins of the Opioid crisis and the solutions being pushed by their expert they had on.

We also talk about how the term “Opioid misuse disorder” is now being used by those pushing the anti-Opioid campaign. This term is extremely problematic and can negatively affect those who they label with the diagnosis. One of the main problems with that label is that there are no objective lag test for it, it has an extremely vague definition and it can effectively describe everyone who has ever used pain pills for over a week.

Another problem with the 60 minute story was the assertion by their expert that opioids are only good for end of life treatment or for 2-3 days after surgery and that there’s no evidence they are effective for long term therapy.

The FDA doesn’t require any drug to show effectiveness for over 90 days including anti-depressants and that there are huge issues with Opioid studies because those given the placebos drop out early and it’s considered unethical to basically torture people in pain on a long term basis.

If he wants evidence all he has to do is ask the 20 million people in chronic pain who’ve been on long term pain medicine if it helps or not. That’s enough evidence for me.

My take is who appointed the so-called expert quoted in the 60 minutes piece, Dr. A.K., the authority on how much pain I or anyone else should experience? This so-called expert is a psychiatrist who didn’t disclose during the 60 minutes piece that he is part of the Univesity who charges money to state governments to implement Prescription Drug Monitoring programs. They presented him as an expert on pain meds when in reality he isn’t.

This highlights many of the topics we discussed which centers around the problem with having the government involved with our healthcare choices. The larger the role of government is in healthcare the more people like Dr. A.K. will use the force of government to enrich themselves at the expense of others

Pharmacist Steve and I discuss the financial aspect of the crisis and while all these billions are being spent to fight the Opioid crisis, prescriptions for opioids are at a 15 year low and Opioid overdoses (mostly due to illegal fentanyl) are at a 15 year high.

We also discuss the wider war on drugs and why the Iron Law of Prohibtion and the government’s own regulations are behind what the media and those in power blame on drugs, drug users, people in pain and doctors.

The current Opioid crisis is in reality an overdose crisis within the addiction community. Only 4 out of 1000 can become addicted to opioids. Why punished 98.5% of the population for something they can never develop?

Chronically Human – Episode 004 – Dr. Thomas Kline – the unseen side of the opioid debate

Thanks for checking out the blog for the Chronically Human Podcast, where we have conversations aimed at creating a world with more freedom and less suffering.

Our guest today is Dr. Thomas Kline. He has been practicing medicine for over 40 years, but now retired, he worked at Harvard Med, trained at Stanford and for the last year and a half has been advocating for pain patients who’ve been negatively affected by the War on Opioids.

You can check out our conversation by following this link:

Millions of Chronic Pain patients are being left behind and forgotten in the rush to demonize opioid pain medicine, not because everyone can become addicted but because everyone doesn’t know the facts.

If you know anyone of the 6.5 million people with chronic pain who have been forced to taper their pain medicine, been forced onto less effective and more expensive alternatives, or have been refused treatment, please watch and share this video.

Dr. Kline was on six months ago and he breaks down for us what has been going on since then, with pain patients, doctors and the law.

We talk about the religious like hysteria being created surrounding opioids and how the facts don’t support the rampant fear.

He also explains what” Fear of Addiction Phobia” is all about and how it’s the main driver of the wasteful and draconian edicts being pushed by the Medical and Media establishment.

People are suffering unnecessarily because of fear and ignorance. Dr. Kline is doing the Lord’s work getting the facts out to people and pushing back against the insane, barbarous and unacceptable way the Media and Medical Establishment are punishing a population of people, whose only crime is that they are in intractable

Take aways:

  1. The Fear of Addiction Phobia is driving the hysteria not the facts.

2. Opioid Addiction is a Type II Addiction which is a genetic disease.

3. The more accurate term is Chemical Receptor Disease.

4. Only 4 out of a 1000 people have the brain receptor deformation that leads to opioid addiction.

5. The lies about opioids and addiction are having disastrous results for the 6.5 million people who rely on pain medicine to live

6. Doctors not law enforcement should be practicing medicine

7. Doctors are frighten to lose their livelihood or even their freedom and so many are choosing not to alleviate pain because of the potential liability.

8. The opioid epidemic is really an overdose epidemic in the addiction community – black market adulterated heroin with fentanyl is the main cause

9. People without the genetic malformed brain receptors can not develop opioid addiction no matter how long they are on pain medicine or in what amounts they are prescribed.

10. The FDA is the only legal authority to tell doctors what they are allowed to prescribe and not the CDC. The 90 mg CDC guideline isn’t legally binding. Doctors have the authority to prescribe any FDA medication including pain medicine, in any amount they decide is appropriate.

11. The addiction industry is not regulated and it takes in $35 billion a year

12. People being prescribed chronic pain medicine isn’t the cause of the so-called opioid epidemic.

13. Millions of chronic pain patients are being forced to taper, because of the belief that they are the cause of the overdose deaths, without their consent, forced onto more expensive and less effective medicines, or refused treatment all together.

14. When people in chronic pain don’t have access to opioids (which have been used for 5000 years) they have three choices:

a. Go to the black market, take adulterated heroin, die and be a headline on the evening news

b. Try to exist with the pain, which is so bad you can’t take care of yourself or those you love. That’s not much of an existence. That leaves the third option.

c. Suicide – unfortunately the war on opioids has led to the unnecessary deaths of people in chronic pain who were refused cheap effective medicines that would have kept them alive and functioning but due to the opioid hysteria they were denied treatment and had no other solution. If you want to cry read Dr. Kline’s article about suicide and chronic pain:

The Federal Government is spending $6 billion of your tax dollars on many misguided efforts which won’t help, that includes a $1 billion for an opioid vaccine – which can’t work.

Dr. Kline does offer solutions which include – more education for high school students – 75% of addiction starts in high school. Tell the kids that if they take an opioid and zoom to the moon be aware they most likely have the genetically caused malformed brain chemical receptors and they need to tell someone fast before it spins out of control.

https://medium.com/@ThomasKlineMD/the-opioid-refugee-crisis-causes-and-recommendations-revised-10-31-18-89559573eb86

Doctors treating those who’ve never take pain pills have a responsibility to tell the Opioid patient the exact same thing. If you experience an insane euphoria when taking the first pill call the doctor immediately – that is an indication that someone is the 4 in a 1000 with the physical chemical receptor deformation that leads to Type II opioid addiction.

Prohibition doesn’t work. Addiction and chronic pain should be left to the doctors. The War on Drugs has cost $1 trillion dollars since the 70’s. It was ramped up by Nixon to target his political enemies, the black community and the anti-war movement. It has imprisoned millions, killed hundreds of thousands at the border, killer hundreds of thousands with black market adulterated drugs, and cause millions of pain patients to be denied compassionate medical care.

Today the media, the government and the Medical Establishment are peddling complete falsehoods about opioids which are in fact miracle drugs, like all things they do carry some risk. But that risk is nowhere near what the media is telling us and that risk can be managed effectively and intelligently without taking away a life saving medicine from millions.

Without opioids every human on Earth would be at the mercy of physical pain without any hope of reprieve, unfortunately millions of chronic pain patients are experiencing that very hell today.

A huge thank you to Dr. Kline for giving us his time and his continued efforts to correct the lies being told about opioids, pain patients, doctors and addiction.

Chronically Human Podcast 001 with Dr. Thomas Kline – the other side of the so called “opioid crisis”

Dr. Kline and I had a fantastic conversation and we hope to have him on again very soon. We talked about how we got to where we are today with the “opioid crisis” and solutions for helping people with chronic physical pain as well as those with biologically caused opioid addiction.

You can listen to our conversation here:

Dr. Kline has dedicated his life to healing. He has been a doctor for 42 years, he did his residency at Stanford, and has worked at Harvard Med as well as Boston Children’s hospital – he now resides and runs his own practice in North Carolina.

One of the main topics we covered was surrounding how much misinformation, deceptive information and out right lies being peddled by those whipping up the masses, which in turn, is causing widespread and unwarranted fear. Dr. Kline is currently focused on eliminating that irrational fear, which is propelling the current war against pain patients, by educating the public, doctors and legislators about the truth concerning opioids.

Dr. Kline explained the biological mechanisms for addiction. He factually broke down the differences between addiction “A” disease versus addiction “B” disease – which is the type that those with true opioid addiction have. It is a receptor polymorphism (deformed receptor) and 80% of people with addiction “B” are exposed to opioids in high school.

Those without the misshaped receptors don’t take the “magic carpet ride” when they take opioids, unlike those with the physical elements that cause addiction “B” experience.

He went all the way back to 1915 and told the story of how prohibition started up to the the current War on Drugs and how it is causing havoc for pain patients and the doctors who are trying to help them.

He urges for addiction and chronic pain treatment to be returned back to the medical system. Currently those with the horrible disease of addiction are treated like lepers and have no place to go. Dr. Kline advocates for medically assisted addiction treatment which proves successful in most cases – and the government doesn’t have to or need to get involved.

We talked about the almost religious nature of how the anti-opioid folks are going after doctors and patients. Dr. Kline explained that its much like the Salem Witch Trials which were more wide spread than you think.

He also spoke about why we have the separation of Church and state in this country. Back in the Pilgrim days there were religious courts that could and did kill people for not conforming to social norms. This has direct implications for how the opioid crisis is being prosecuted.

We also touched on how the chronic pain patients in America are being treated and how it’s analogous to how no one wanted to help people with AIDS back in the 80’s. I’ve personally had doctors refuse to “take ownership” of certain health issues I have because it would have compelled them to be responsible for relieving my pain. Which most doctors would rather not deal with patients with pain.

Dr. Kline did advocate for ending drug prohibition but honestly added he doesn’t have all the answers. We discussed briefly Portugal and Switzerland’s take on ending the War on Drugs. He did ask the audience to send him suggestions about how we can start eliminating the destructive War on Drugs.

If you too have an idea please reach out to Dr. Kline on Twitter: @ThomasKlineMD

Overall Dr. Kline believes as I do, that education and presenting the facts persistently are the only ways to change the minds of the public and the politicians.

He even advocates the truthful teaching of teenagers -about opioids in high school and explaining that if they feel or see someone experiencing insane amounts of euphoria from taking opioids, very likely they could be addicted and they’d know to get immediate medical help.

He also talked about we could save almost all the people who overdosed on opioids by medically managing addiction, removing the criminal justice system from the practice of medicine, ending the War on Drugs, educating people on the dangers of mixing drugs, and by teaching those in the addiction community how to resuscitate one of their own, with a simple $20 device that could help their friend breathe and stay alive, in case of an overdose.

Finally we touched on the FDA July 9th meeting – in which Dr. Kline will be in the audience attending. The meeting is the first time since the most recent opioid hysteria swept the nation that the FDA is actually going to talk to the people most affected by the new medical inquisition that has caused wide spread damage to individuals in pain, as well as to the doctor patient relationship.

I you are a pain patient please leave your comment on the FDA website. They are taking comments until Sept 9th 2018. By law they have to read those comments and enter them into the official record.

Here you can make your voice heard. Currently there are only 851 comments. Let’s get they to 1000 by tomorrow.

At one point everyone has experienced terrible physical pain. Now think if that pain never went away. That’s what living with chronic pain is all about. And those in pain should have access to the safest, most effective pain relieving substances known to man – opioids.

Thanks to Dr. Kline for the informative and enjoyable conversation.

Please share this post to all those that you know who are suffering in pain and can’t get help or if you suffer from chronic pain as well. Dr. Kline is a shining beacon of compassion in the darkness of despair, that is the current atmosphere of the opioid hysteria.

Thanks for reading and listening,

Brad Miller
