Today, our guest is my good friend, Tom “The Tank” Egan.

Tom hails from Ireland, he is a former UFC fighter and now one of the best Mixed Martial Arts trainers in the country. He shares a lot of great insights in his strong Irish accent, about fighting, freedom and America.

We had a great time talking about MMA fighting, Individual Freedom, Government Oppression, the importance of Culture and why being Personally Accountable for one’s actions, in the Octagon as well as in everyday life, is vital for success.

We start off by covering the UFC Brooklyn Main Event. Tom breaks down brilliantly what Cejudo did right and explains what a huge gamble TJ took by cutting so much weight.

He also said that we should still give TJ a lot of respect for making the weight cut and taking on that daunting challenge. Tom gives his unique perspective about the controversy surrounding the practice of interviewing fighters after a knockout or referee stoppage. He recounts his time being interviewed by Joe Rogan after a tough loss and how much of a big a deal that was for him as a young fighter.

From the discussion on fighting we delve into the topic of Individual Freedom. Specifically we talk about the Bill of Rights and how most Americans take this revolutionary document for granted. He touches on why he came to America and how his own views have changed since he’s been here.

Tom also offers great insight into the history of Ireland’s struggle for Freedom and how there is a big push to bring back the Gaelic language to reclaim some of its forgotten heritage. He also sheds light on how politicians (around the world) like to act as if what they are doing is what’s best for their people, but in the end most are only looking to raise their status, pad their pockets and ensure their spot inside the aristocracy.

We also talk about what happens when the inherent natural rights of the individual are denied and violated by the very governments that were instituted to protect them. He makes a great point about how the monstrous machine that Hitler created was done right under the nose of the German people.

If you want to be free you must also be responsible and we delve into the relationship between the two ideas.

I mention Jordan Peterson’s book “The 12 Rules for Life” – in particular Rule #2 Make your bed. I share Peterson’s admonition:

“You should sort yourself out before trying to fix the world.”

Making your bed everyday is one way to start making the world a better place with your own hands and initiative. By taking care of the smallest things in life we set the stage for more responsibility in the future. Unfortunately we have a large segment of the population who are a part of the outrage culture, who focus their attention on what others are doing or not doing. It’s extremely easy to fall into the trap of searching out the flaws in others instead of searching out our own.

We began by talking fighting and that’s where we ended the conversation. Tom relays how he had a fighter recently who was struggling outside the cage. He was blaming everyone else for his problems except himself. Tom told the young man that he should focus on what he can control, stop blaming everyone else for his problems and to start taking ownership of his actions. All great advice.

At the end of our talk I ask Tom what it takes mentally to get into the cage and fight another man. He gives a good accounting of his mental preparation before a fight as well as what type of mindset is needed to control the fear and to face it head on. This window into the mind of an MMA fighter and coach can be applicable in everyday life for any of us, who will never see the inside of an MMA Cage.
